Notch, the creator of Minecraft, recently announced plans to develop a spiritual successor to the iconic game but has now decided to put those plans on hold indefinitely. Instead, he will focus on a project titled Levers and Chests.

Since its humble beginnings as Cave Game in 2009, Minecraft has evolved into one of the most successful games of all time, becoming a cornerstone of indie gaming. Over the past 15 years, it has continually expanded with regular updates, introducing fresh content and features to keep players engaged. With no sequel on the horizon, Minecraft is set to remain a timeless classic in the gaming world.

Mojang’s version of Minecraft has become an iconic game in its own right, but it seems that Markus “Notch” Persson, the original creator, had bigger plans. Notch recently revealed his intention to develop a true sequel to the game, essentially a “Minecraft 2.” However, just days after making this announcement, it appears that those plans have already been delayed.

According to a report by 80 Level, Notch, the creator of Minecraft, recently announced on Twitter that his team at Bitshift Entertainment has decided to halt plans for a Minecraft sequel. Instead, they will be shifting their focus to developing a new project called Levers and Chests. Notch explained that the decision was influenced by positive feedback from PC Gamer, which described the new game as “seemed interesting.”

Note

For those that don’t know, Levers and Chests is a first-person roguelike with dungeon-crawling mechanics that was announced alongside Bitshift Entertainment back in 2024.

Notch provided more insight into his decision to focus on “Levers and Chests” when a fan expressed feeling “betrayed” in response to his tweet. The creator of Minecraft reassured fans by explaining that creating a spiritual successor to the game would be “far less enjoyable” compared to his current project. He also pointed out that such successors often end up being nothing more than “sad nostalgia dumps,” lacking the excitement of new ideas.

Notch, the original creator of Minecraft, once stated that fans should direct their questions about a potential Minecraft 2 to Microsoft, the game’s current owner. He also hinted that the results of a Twitter poll played a role in the lack of a sequel. According to Notch, the team might have considered developing a successor if the poll had shown a stronger preference for it. However, the responses were not overwhelmingly in favor, leaving the idea of Minecraft 2 off the table for now.
